THE National Parliament of Solomon Islands (NPSI) has hosted a media workshop for journalists, aimed at strengthening partnership between Parliament and local media.
The workshop-an introduction and refresher, was tailored to educate journalists on the Parliamentary settings, formal language, and the roles and responsibilities of those serving in the National Parliament.
The training is part of an initiative supported by the Westminster Foundation of Democracy and NPSI.
Held from the 1st – 3rd of October 2025 at King Solomon Hotel, the workshop brought together journalists from the Island Sun, Tavuli News, Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC) ZFM and senior officers from key Parliament Departments.
Sessions conducted focused on building professional understanding of Parliament’s legislative processes, Hansard reporting, committee work, and the importance of accurate, balanced coverage of parliamentary proceedings.
The participant also had the first hand opportunity to visit the different departments, learn, observe and ask questions.
ZFM Reporter, Ian Oso said that the workshop was an “eye-opener” he shared that before attending the training, he had little knowledge of the parliament.
All of that change, after he sat and interacted through the sessions, saying that now he is walking away with new information and ideas on how he could improve his reporting.
In a statement, Clerk to the National Parliament, Mr. Jefferson Hallu, acknowledged the support of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) and its media and communications consultant, Ms. Naomi Goldsmith.
He also lauded the participants and organizers for their commitment throughout the training.
“This three-day engagement has been a milestone in our efforts to build a stronger relationship between Parliament and the media. The establishment of a Press Gallery will be a step forward in ensuring openness, professionalism, and transparency in parliamentary reporting,” he added.
The training is also in preparation to establish the NPSI first ever press gallery.
