SIX Solomon Islands journalists have recently returned from a productive weeklong study tour to Guangdong Province, China, learning about modern newsroom technologies, innovative management practices, and new strategies to enhance engaging audiences in the digital age.
During the tour, the cohort visited the China Broadnet and the Shenzhen News Group, gaining first-hand exposure to the organization’s dynamic technologically advancement
At China Broadnet, the cohort visited facilities supporting broadcast television, radio services, digital streaming platforms, and a nationwide telecommunications network.
The cohort also experience how traditional media and digital platforms are fused to ensure reliable news delivery. Other highlights included advanced multimedia production studios, innovative content-management systems, and labs showcasing the future of radio-TV convergence.
The visit to Shenzhen News Group offered insights into the dynamics of a major media conglomerate operating across daily newspapers, magazines, online portals, mobile apps, and digital advertising. Delegates observed how the group combines print journalism with sophisticated online strategies to engage millions of readers across China and beyond.
Throughout the tour, the journalists engaged in in-depth discussions with senior executives, editors, producers, and digital-media strategists. Conversations focused on overcoming challenges faced by traditional media, such as declining print readership, shifting audience habits, and the growing demand for rapid digital content.
Executives shared strategies on multimedia integration, data-driven content production, short-video formats, cross-platform storytelling, and digital subscription models – all aimed at keeping legacy media competitive in an increasingly online world.
