Membership FAQs
What is MASI?
MASI is the Media Association of Solomon Islands, a not-for-profit professional association serving the country’s media community. It promotes ethical journalism, protects media freedom and advances the interests, welfare and rights of people working in the industry.
Is MASI a trade union?
No. MASI is a professional media association, not a trade union. Supporting the welfare and rights of its members is part of its work.
Who does MASI represent?
MASI represents the wider media community in Solomon Islands, including print, radio, television and online media. Its scope includes media, public relations and communications professionals working in government, businesses, NGOs, churches and community organisations.
Who can become a MASI member?
Journalists, editors, broadcasters, freelance journalists, media educators, communications and public relations professionals, and eligible staff of media organisations can apply. Membership requires Executive Committee approval, agreement to MASI’s policies and payment of the annual subscription.
What are the membership categories?
MASI has three membership categories:
- Mainstream media: People working in organisations whose core function is media, including media-related staff and staff in management, sales and finance.
- Individual media: Media, public relations and communications professionals working in government, NGOs, community organisations or industry, plus freelance journalists and media educators.
- Honorary members: People outside media work who have given special service to MASI or the industry, or are key industry stakeholders. They must be recommended by an existing member and approved by the Executive Committee.
Is membership only for Solomon Islanders?
MASI serves the media industry in Solomon Islands. Its Constitution does not explicitly restrict membership by citizenship. Non-citizens working in the country’s media industry should contact MASI to clarify their eligibility.
I run a Facebook page, blog or YouTube channel. Can I join?
Running a digital platform does not automatically qualify someone for membership. Eligibility depends on your work and whether it fits a MASI membership category.
Can students or people interested in journalism join?
MASI Constitution does not specify a separate student or general-interest membership category. Interest in journalism alone does not automatically qualify someone. Contact MASI to discuss your circumstances and opportunities to get involved.
Can Members of Parliament join MASI?
No. The MASI Constitution excludes Members of Parliament from MASI membership and Executive Committee positions. Government employees working in media, public relations or communications may still apply under the relevant membership category.
Does working for a media organisation automatically make me a member?
No. You must complete MASI’s membership requirements and receive Executive Committee approval. If your employer arranges membership payments, contact the Coordinator to confirm your individual membership status.
Does my employer’s membership cover me as an individual?
No. Company membership and individual membership are separate. Your employer’s membership payment does not automatically make you an individual MASI member. You must complete the individual membership requirements, including Executive Committee approval and payment of your individual annual subscription.
How do I apply for membership?
Contact the MASI Coordinator for an application form and current payment instructions. Complete the form, agree to follow MASI’s policies and submit your application for Executive Committee approval. Membership also requires payment of the annual subscription.
How much does membership cost?
Contact the MASI Coordinator for the current fee schedule and payment details. Company membership and individual membership are separate, so please confirm the fee that applies to your application.
